Historia ecclesiastica.
Historia ecclesiastica. (Ed. Gaufridus Boussardus).
Lyon, Printed by Benedictus Bonnyn for Jacobus and Franciscus Giunta, 1533. Old vellum. (40, 192) p. Title page in Renaissance frame, printed in red and black. Extensive tabula (register) placed at the beginning. Text printed in two columns. Many small woodcut initials (criblé - white dotted). Publisher's mark with lily and the letters I and F between two roaring lions on the last page. The cover was roughly cut from a piece of old parchment, on which an embossed old coat of arms (with the Order of the Elephant) can still be seen. Ownership inscriptions by Luigi Chiappelli, an Italian historian from the late 19th century, and Jac. Bäcker, a priest. Paper somewhat browned and worn in the beginning. First two leaves with some small side bites. A few numbers written on back cover.
Apart from the Renaissance frame on the title page, this book still looks like an incunable, with its Gothic bastarda letter. The colophon is dated September 6, 1533. This is the church history of Eusebius, written in Greek, and continuing until the death of Emperor Theodosius and his succession by Arcadius in the late fourth century - long after Eusebius' death. In antiquity, the Church History was translated into Latin, but this text was edited by Geoffroy Boussard (1439-1522), a theologian at the Sorbonne.
