A very well-preserved copy of the first Ghent edition of De Smet's account of his missionary journeys through the American Northwest and the Rocky Mountains. This edition contains material and maps not found in the earlier American edition.
A very scarce and exceptional presentation copy. Inscribed and signed by the author to the Marquis de Courtebonne, dated 27 March 1848: ?Hommage de respect et de reconnaissance à Mr le Marquis de Courtebonne, de la part de P. J. De Smet S.J.?, probably Alphonse de Calonne, Marquis de Courtebonne (1788?1857).
