1498. Gregorius AMASAEUS Panegyricus in laudem cardinalis Grimani. Venice, Simon Bevilaqua, (after 19 June 1498). 21 x 16 cm. 20th cent. vellum. Quarto. [22] leaves. Printed in Latin in a roman type. With a title page and at the end an errata list. The explicit mentions only the date the panegyric was first read, but probably the book was published shortly afterwards. One large printed initial F. Old owner's mark in pencil of the large-scale collector Georges Petit, ?474x/ Déc 32?. Goff A-549. ISTC ia00549000. 37 copies of this edition in public institutions, none in Belgium or in the Netherlands. Fine book with wide margins. "Laudatory address to the cardinal Grimiani." The only edition of this flattering text, a classical Roman tradition revived, for Domenico Grimani (1461-1523), scion of an influential Venetian family. His father was to be Doge of Venice in the 1520s. A rich man and a great collector, Grimani was the owner of the Breviarum Grimani, one of the most beautiful breviaries in the world.
