[16], 573,[2]pp. Bound in an excellent Thibaron-Joly binding (gilted at inner front plate). Complete red morocco, ribbed, gilted sides, gilt decorated boards (binding between 1850-1880). When the iconoclasm of 1566 swept through Antwerp, Van Wesenbeke had to implement the measures of Governor Margaretha. He negotiated this with the Lutherans and Calvinists, but was himself considered a heretic, just like Antoon van Stralen. In April 1567 the situation became untenable for him and he left Antwerp. He joined William of Orange at Dillenburg, whose secretary he became. On May 14, 1568, the Council of Riots sentenced him in absentia to perpetual banishment and confiscation of property. He then published a statement of defence. Another of his writings was an anonymous defense of the executed Earl of Horne. During his exile, Van Wesembeke assisted William of Orange as an advisor and publicist. He traveled through the Netherlands, arranged arms purchases and collected financial contributions for the uprising. But several plans failed and he gradually lost the prince's confidence in favor of Philip of Marnix of Sint-Aldegonde. On May 31, 1571, he was reprimanded for distributing pamphlets without Orange's approval. In April 1572 he fulfilled an assignment in Emden, but shortly afterwards he disappeared from the spotlight. Only because the States of Holland had appointed him commissioner of war in August 1571 did he still accompany the prince on a journey from Holland through Brabant to Bergen. Burdened with debts, he died before 1575.
