Reize: Illustrated with 2 engraved title pages and 125 beautifully engraved plates numbered I-LXXII, [LXXIII] (vol. 1) & I-LII (vol. 2), of which 38 folding, showing topographic views, watermills, people and costumes, Egyptian and Persian antiquities, Egyptian (hieroglyphic), Persian, cuneiform and other inscriptions, etc. Unnumbered folding map of Yemen at the end of vol. 1 (48,5 x 41,5 cm) with trade routes coloured by hand. - 2. Beschryving: Illustrated with engraved title page and 25 finely engraved plates numbered I-XXIV, [XXV], of which 7 folding, showing a view of military exercises, 2 Kufic inscriptions (coloured by hand) and 4 maps, other plates showing maps, topographic views, costumes, coins and Arabic inscriptions. Unnumbered folding map of Yemen at the end (58,5 x 39 cm) coloured by hand in outline. Binding slightly rubbed, inner hinge of vol. 2 loose, otherwise good. Half titles sligthly thumbed, minor foxing in blank margins. Very good large paper copy, only slightly trimmed.
# Very rare large paper copies of the first and only editions of the Dutch translation of Niebuhr?s famous account of a voyage to Arabia and surrounding countries (1. Reize) and his description of Arabia, Egypt, Persia and the Middle East (2. Beschryving). The Danish traveller and surveyor Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was invited to join a scientific expedition to Egypt in 1760. They travelled Yemen, Mocha, India, Bombay, Muscat, Shiraz, Babylon, Bahdad, Mosul, Aleppo, Persepolis, Mekka, Medina, and Palestine, before finally returning to Copenhagen in 1767, with Niebuhr as the sole survivor of the expedition.
