London, 1705; contemporary owner's signature to the title page. - 'After John Smith, the first account of this colony, the first one penned by a native and the best contemporary record of its aboriginal tribes and of the life of its early settlers (Howes p 55). Beverley's style is easy, unsophisticated, and pleasing, and his work is most useful for the period following the Restoration (Church 821). This work affords the most vivid, comprehensive, instructive, and entertaining picture of Virginia at the date of his writing that is to be found (Sabin 5117). The book served to attract many immigrants to Virginia. The fine engravings are based on engravings from De Bry's Grand Voyages. - Slightly age-browned otherwise fine.
