1885, London, 2pp, addressed to Harper Bros, his publishers requesting them to send a copy of his latest book, "The Congo and the Founding of its Free State" to 'my friend Col Finlay Anderson', dated August 6th 1885.
Anderson, a fellow journalish, had established his reputation writing for the New York Herald during the American Civil War (1861-65), and on his recommendation Stanley was also employed by the Herald. They had first met in 1867, when Anderson was the representative for London, and Stanley had reported on the British expedition in Abyssinia as special correspondent.
Stanley travelled through the Congo from 1879 until 1884 on behalf of King Leopold II of Begium, and the establishment of the Congo Free State, a territory of nearly a million square miles, was assisted by his endevours and was one of the more significant events in the so-called "scramble for Africa".
