(MICKEY MOUSE). Piet W. BULTHUIS (compiler) Linoleumsneden vervaardigd door leerlingen van de Nutsscholen te 's-Gravenhage. Serie II. (The Hague, self-published, 1932). Original orange wrappers. With 32 original linocuts, all protected with silk paper. Foreword on the inside cover. At the back a table with the title of the linocuts and the age of the student, but without the name. 1st edition. The spine on the head and foot is slightly torn, also a side tear at the back. Protruding edges slightly faded, faint moisture stain at the front. ?Linoleum cuts made by students of the Schools for Public Advancement in The Hague?. The Mickey Mouse figure was designed by Walt Disney in 1928, but only became famous in the Netherlands in 1931. Piet Bulthuis (1898-1988), a graphic artist and drawing teacher in Kijkduin, the little seaside quarter of The Hague, had his pupils make linocuts that were bundled annually in small editions. This is the second collection, but the first in which the growing popularity of Mickey Mouse is evident: three linocuts, including the one on the cover, are images of Mickey Mouse, made by children aged 11, 15 and 17. 'Most topics were self-chosen, occasionally specified'. The wajang dolls and scarecrows, which can be found here in plural, probably fall into the latter category. 'In addition to more successful expressions, this book also contains more flawed expressions' in order to provide a complete picture. But the other linocuts are also not to be despised, in this beautiful and extremely rare book, which can (naturally) be compared with the linobooks of that other drawing teacher, Jan G. Jordens, and printed by H.N. Werkman. == Early Mickey Mouse depictions in linocut by Dutch children (11, 15 and 17 years old) in a rare school presentation book of original linocuts.
