- Robert Edwin Peary (1856 - 1920) was an American explorer and officer in the United States Navy who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for, in April 1909, leading an expedition that claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. Peary's claim was widely debated along with a competing claim made by Frederick Cook. The narrative of Peary's expedition of 1908-1910 contains its organization, personnell, the voyage, the Roosevelt's passage through the ice of Smith Sound-Robeson Channel and winter quarters at Camp Jesup, Cape Sheridan, north Ellesmere Island. - A fine copy.
Arctic Bibl. 13230.
