Herbarium (c. 1890)
32 x 24 cm, contemporary half-leather binding with percaline boards, original paper label with the compiler?s name on the front board, 135 folios of which 124 contain pressed plants mounted on paper; excellent condition. A well-preserved late-19th-century herbarium compiled by Elise Dejaiffe (1858?1949), daughter of Télesphore Dejaiffe, mayor of Mazy and director of the region?s black-marble quarries. This carefully executed ?hortus siccus? offers a fine example of amateur botanical practice of the period. The specimens are neatly arranged and accompanied by handwritten annotations, including classification notes in French and plant names in Latin. A compelling document of both regional natural history and personal scientific interest.
